Reva Maxine Atwood, 97

Reva Maxine Atwood, 97, of Newton died Mon-day, Aug. 26, 2019, at Mercy Hospice – Johnston. Funeral was at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 31, at Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton.

Memorials to Pleasant View Church or the Community Heights Alliance Church may be left at  Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

Maxine, the daughter of Hallie and Elva (Sparks) Youngkin, was born Apr. 24, 1922, on the Youngkin farm north of Sully. She was the oldest of seven children. Maxine graduated from Kellogg High School with the Class of 1939.

June 1, 1941, Maxine was united in marriage with Harry N. Atwood at her parents’ home in rural Newton. They lived in Los Angeles, CA, until Harry was called to serve in the Army in 1944. After he returned, they lived on the Atwood farm and in 1960, moved into Newton.

Maxine was a member of the Pleasant View Church and later a member of the Community Heights Alliance Church. There she served on the Hostess Committee for many years. Maxine cleaned houses for many people and helped Mr. and Mrs. Homer Denniston for 25 years.  She liked to embroider and cross-stitch and enjoyed making quilts at the church.

Maxine is survived by three sons, Alan Atwood (Diana Kocher) of Newton, Randy (Rhonda) Atwood of Newton, and Brett (Charlene) Atwood of St. Charles, MO; daughters-in-law, Donna Jo Atwood of Olathe, KS, and Lynn Atwood of Tempe, AZ; six grandchildren; her 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Nadine Anderson of Healdsburg, CA; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harry Atwood; two sons, Gary and Bruce Atwood; daughter-in-law, Shirley Atwood; grandson, Scott Andrew Atwood; granddaughter, Amy Atwood; four brothers, Earl, Bruce, Bob, and Don Atwood; and sister, Bonnie.

Maxine was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family, church family, and many friends.
