Rev. Daniel Hakken, 89

The Rev. Bernard Daniel Hakken, Jr., 89, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, Dec. 24, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Elda Hakken; and his brother, James Hakken.

Rev. Hakken will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Donna (Hoogerhyde) Hakken; his children, Ruth (Douglas) Roosien, John Hakken, Daniel (Lynda) Hakken, Timothy (Kellie) Hakken, Matthew (Amy) Hakken, Mary (Seishi) Okamoto, and Andrew (Cara) Hakken; his 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Rev. Hakken was born in Bahrain, Arabia, to missionary parents. He graduated from Hope College and Western Theological Seminary. He served in ministry for over 40 years: As a missionary in the Philippines and a pastor of churches in Muskegon (Forest Home Reformed), MI, Grand Rapids (New Life Reformed), MI, and Sully First Reformed from 1978-1992. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a talented woodworker, building boats and various watercraft for his family to enjoy. Hunting, fishing, snorkeling, and camping were some of his other favorite hobbies.

A memorial service was Wednesday, Dec. 28, at Martin Reformed Church, 1073 116th Avenue, Martin, MI. The Revs. Mark Heijerman and Fritz Kruithof officiated.
