Melvin Leroy Rouwenhorst, 88

Melvin Leroy Rouwenhorst was born May 16, 1929, in Prairie City to Everett and Jennie (De Graff) Rouwenhorst. He passed away Sept. 11, 2017, in Oskaloosa at the age of 88. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 14, at Prairie City First Reformed Church. Memorial donations may be given in his memory to Hospice of Pella, Lake View Camp, or Pella First Reformed Church.

Melvin was a 1947 graduate of Prairie City High School. He served two years in the U.S. Army, where he was awarded two bronze stars. June 21, 1957, he married Annie Van Der Pol at the Sully First Reformed Church. They lived in Prairie City until 1963, then moved to Pleasantville, where Melvin was a farmer, cattle feeder, and real estate broker. Melvin made his profession of faith in the Prairie City First Reformed Church. Presently, he was a member of Pella First Reformed Church.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Ann; his sisters: Leona Vande Lune of Altoona and Maxine Schuttinga of Altoona; sisters-in-law: Nellie Zylstra of Pella and Carlene Van Der Pol of Sully; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Louise Kane, Norma Schuttinga, and Laverna Aalbers; and his brothers-in-law: Bernie Van Der Pol, Orville Zylstra, Beryl Kane, Bill Vande Lune, Gerald Schuttinga, Art Schuttinga, and Don Aalbers.
