Hendrika Rozendaal, 99

Hendrika Rozendaal, 99, of Grinnell and former-ly of Sully, died Nov. 27, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 30, at Sully First Reformed Church. Memorials may be given to Sully First Reformed Church or Hospice of Central Iowa.

Hendrika Johanna Matilda Zegers was born Jan. 19, 1918, to Willem and Mary (Van Kolfscholten) Zegers in Wouden-berg, Netherlands.

Hendrika and her family came to the United States in 1924, when she was seven years old. They made their home on the Maytag Farm in Jasper County where she attended school through the eighth grade. Hendrika later went on to earn her G.E.D.

In January 1941, she married Adrianus “Jim” Van Weelden. This union was blessed with two children: Linda and Jim. Sadly, her husband Jim passed away in 1948, just two years after returning from the Army. Hendrika then married Walter Rozendaal in 1953 and was blessed with six stepchildren.

Hendrika worked for the Sully telephone office from home and as waitress at the café in Sully for several years. To provide for her family, she took in boarders for $5 a day. She was a talented seamstress and made clothes, rugs, quilts, and even wedding dresses. In every situation in her life, she “made do.”

Hendrika was a longtime member of Sully First Reformed Church and taught Sunday school for over 30 years.

Hendrika's family includes: Her children, the late Jim and Sheryl Van Weelden, and Linda and Richard Schnell; and her stepchildren, the late Junior and June Rozendaal, Marge and the late Wilbur Van Dusseldorp, Junella and the late Pete Lanser, Maurice and Linda Rozendaal, Harvey and Mary Rozendaal, and Rodger and Vicki Rozendaal. She is also survived by two of her nine siblings: Bill and Dixie Zegers and Nellie Van Hemert; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grand- children; and her stepfamily.
