Donald Rozendaal, 80

Funeral services for Donald G. Rozendaal, 80, of Pella and formerly of Sully, were held Thursday, Apr. 11, 2019, at Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery, Pella. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be designated for Pella Christian High School or Pella Prolife.

Donald Gene Rozendaal was the second of six sons born to Albert and Cora (Van Gilst) Rozendaal. He was born at home in Lynnville on Sept. 14, 1938. Donald was a member of the first graduating class of Lynnville-Sully High School in Sully in 1957. He was baptized and made profession of his faith at Sully First Reformed Church where he served as an elder and a deacon.

As a young man, Donald worked at the Sully Locker for a couple of years. He then became an employee of the Sully Co-op where he worked in the elevator and fertilizer department for 55 years.

Aug. 2, 1960, he and Evelyn Arlene Engbers were united in marriage at the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella. They made their home in Sully and together they raised three children:  Randol Jay, Vicki Lynn, and Michael Gene. After raising their children, they were privileged to travel extensively to several countries. Don and Evelyn enjoyed going out to Lake Red Rock and also camping with friends. He continued to regularly visit his farm and enjoyed going away and doing things with family and friends. One of their highlights was taking their family on cruises for their 40th and 50th wedding anniversaries and spending a couple weeks every winter in Florida for several years with friends.

Don was a man of few words, but he devoutly loved God and his family.

After retiring in 2014, his health was declining and on Sunday, Apr. 7, 2019, Don passed away rather unexpectedly at Pella Regional Health Center.

Don is survived by his wife, Evelyn A. (Engbers) Rozendaal; three children: Randol (Michele) Rozendaal and Vicki (Scott) Nikkel, all of Sully, and Michael (Sandra) Rozendaal of West Des Moines; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grand-children; and five brothers: Harold (Velma) Rozendaal, Alvin (Shirley) Rozendaal, Cassell (Beverly) Rozendaal, Russell (Lois) Rozendaal, and Earl (Marcia) Rozendaal and the following sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Eileen (Engbers) and Roger Van Kooten, Donna (Engbers) and Henry Van Rheenen, all of Pella.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister-in-law, Shirley Rozendaal; and his parents-in-law, Wilbur and Genella (Van Heukelom) Engbers.

Donald was a member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella.
