Cornelia Den Adel, 89

Cornelia Den Adel, 89, of Pella passed away at Pella Comfort House on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017. Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 18 at Third Reformed Church, Pella. Family interment at the Oakwood Cemetery preceded the service. Memorials are suggested for the Hospice of Pella Comfort House or the Third Reformed Church in Pella.

Cornelia De Jong was born Jan. 23, 1928, the second daughter of Flor and Agnes (Huyser) De Jong at their farm in rural Sully. She attended the Chester Country Grade School and graduated from the Sully High School.

Aug. 21, 1946, she was united in marriage with Donald LeRoy Den Adel at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union four children were born. For 47-1/2 years they lived on the family farm north of Pella, and in 1993, they moved into a duplex at 1118 Boone Street in Pella.

Cornelia worked for several years and later became manager of the laundry department at the Pella Community Hospital for 2.5 years before she retired. She then became a volunteer for the Hospital Auxiliary helping in the then gift shop/snack bar. She also was involved with the auxiliary at North Hilltop and was a member of the Christian Opportunity Center Auxiliary, who provided food for farm sales and helped can food for the residents at the Christian Opportunity Center.

Cornelia was a faithful member of the Third Reformed Church where she made profession of her faith in 1947. She sang with the women’s chorus, helped in the children’s nursery, and was chairwoman of the funeral committee for 15 years. In the most recent years, Cornelia enjoyed making charity quilts with the Knotty Ladies Quilting Group. She also made and hand quilted many quilts in her spare time at home for her family and friends.

As Don’s health needs continued to require more assistance than Cornelia was able to provide, he became a resident at The Cottages in Pella on Oct. 6, 2016. On Oct. 31, 2016, Cornelia was moved to the Hospice of Pella Comfort House where Don passed away on Mar. 13, 2017, at the age of nearly 92 years. Cornelia and Don shared their lives together for over 70 years, and Cornelia continued to reside at the Comfort House where she also passed away Sept. 14.

Those left to cherish her memory are her four children and their families: Corliss Hareng of Franklin, WI, Judy (Gerald) Roose of Pella, Kayla (Chasty “Butch”) Goben of Lacona, and Harlan (Charon) Den Adel of Pella; and their extended family. Of her original family, Cornelia leaves her younger sister, Lucille (George) Sjaardema of Reasnor; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law: Ruth Fazio of Indiana and Fern (Kenneth) Uitermarkt of Pella; and many nieces and nephews.

Cornelia was preceded in death by her husband; her son-in-law, Charles Hareng; her parents; her older sister, Elizabeth and her husband, Ivan Renaud; her parents-in-law, William and Johanna (Van Engelenhoven) Den Adel; and a sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law: Joyce and Robert Brown and Peter Fazio.
