Bob Ver Woert, 76

                Robert “Bob” Ver Woert, 76, of Sully died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2019, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.  The family greeted friends Friday evening, Feb. 22, at Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. Memorials to Mercy One Newton Medical Center – Emergency Department may be left at the funeral home.

                Bob, the son of Andrew and Ruth (Castorf) Ver Woert, was born Apr. 21, 1942, in Pella. He grew up in the Sully area and graduated from Lynnville-Sully High School. Bob served his country in the U.S. Marines. He was stationed on the “USS Midway” and was a member of the U.S. Marines Honor Guard.  Bob was united in marriage with Pat Cowdin on Nov. 24, 1961, at First United Methodist Church in Newton. Upon returning from the military, Bob worked for UPS for 10 years while living in Des Moines and Waterloo. In 1971, Bob and Pat moved back to the family farm near Sully, and Bob began farming. He also was a supervisor at the Maytag Company for 19 years. 

                Bob was a talented woodworker and had made everything from furniture to bowls and spoons. He enjoyed bowling, playing slow pitch softball, coaching girl’s softball, and golfing. 

                Bob is survived by his wife, Pat Ver Woert of Sully; children, Susan (Glenn) Esther of Newton, Teri (Greg) Beeler of West Des Moines, Shelly Ver Woert of Newton, and Andy (Jenny) Ver Woert of Brooklyn; six grandchildren, Alex Peters, Nick (Marty) Esther, Sam (Paige) Peters, Addam Peters, Tabitha Fisher, and Jac Fisher; two great-grandchildren, Jack and Matilda Peters; his mother, Ruth Ver Woert of Pella; his sisters, Ruthanne Van Wyk and Linda (Gerrit) Verhey, both of Pella; and his sister-in-law, Carol Ver Woert of Pella.

                He was preceded in death by his father, Andrew Ver Woert, and brother, Joe Ver Woert.
