Open house Saturday at Sully’s newest business building

When Craig Maasdam of Sully broke ground for a new building for his Fast Trax Sports business in 2009, he always envisioned a second building eventually going up. Maasdam thought a restaurant or ice cream shop would be a good addition to his business next door and the town in general. Six years later, the vision of a second building has come true. But rather than serving ice cream cones or a lunch special, the four businesses currently occupying the space in Maasdam’s new building offer everything from legal advice to massage therapy. Maasdam is holding an open house for the tenants – Konek P.C., Kreykes Law Office, Brynne Winegar Massage Therapy, and HE & ME Photography – on Saturday, Apr. 22, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The public is invited to take a look inside the unique space which Maasdam has poured countless hours designing, constructing, and finishing with the help of Dale Rolffs and Scott Coffin, and his family on the interior.

In November 2015, Maasdam broke ground for his new building at 104 1st Street in Sully. Craig had two businesses lined up to rent space in the building before he broke ground. With his own plans drawn up and a vision for a historic look, Maasdam moved forward with construction. Every detail of the building, which oozes with both authentic and replicated historic charm, was carefully thought out. From the exterior masonry to the high, tin-clad ceilings, the style of the building is meant to draw customers back to the 1910s and 1920s. Tongue-and-groove floors made of Southern hickory, push-button light switches, authentic doors bought from an auction, a sliding barn door built by Maasdam and hung on an old track, and shiplap on the walls, among other details, all contribute to giving the newly-built structure historic charm. The building even features plumbing and other fixtures dating back over 100 years that once were in the old Brand hardware store on the square, which Maasdam has kept over the years.

The building is well suited for the four businesses currently renting office space from Maasdam.

Konek P.C.

Konek P.C., a full-service accounting firm serving central Iowa for over 25 years with four branches, was the first business to settle in the new building. Konek previously rented space in Maasdam’s Fast Trax building and moved their offices over to the east side of the new building on Dec. 1, 2016. Konek will offer year-round staffing at their Sully branch. Local CPAs Hollie Nunnikhoven and Rusty Van Wyk are Konek P.C. employees and are dedicated to providing excellent service in the areas of tax preparation, business consultation, bookkeeping and compilation, payroll services, estate planning, notary services, and more.

Brynne Winegar Massage Therapy

In early March 2017, Brynne Winegar of Sully moved her massage therapy business into the new building. Winegar, who has offered massage therapy to locals for years, was contacted by Maasdam before ground was even broke for the new building. Winegar was facing a challenge in her part-time business that offers 30- and 60-minute massages as well as reflexology treatments due to a necessary location change. The timing of Maasdam’s offer was perfect.

“I am very thankful for Craig working with me. He came to me before the new building had even gotten started and offered me a space. He also gave me a place in the old hardware store so I didn't have to stop working with my clients,” said Winegar. “Actually, many people in this community contacted me and offered me a temporary place to go – clients of mine and non-clients – from their basements to a spot in their businesses to other places just so I didn't have to stop. I want them all to know that I am very thankful and appreciate all of them. It means a lot to me to have people care about my small business and want me to continue with it and succeed.”

Winegar loves her cozy new space in the southwest corner of the building. She was able to decorate the area as she wanted to meet the needs of her clientele. A sign in the room reads, “Do what you love and love what you do.” That motto rings true for the massage therapist of 13 years.

“I am loving my new space!” said Winegar. “I actually have a place to call my own now, which I haven't had in a very long time.” Clients can schedule an appointment with Winegar on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings.

HE & ME Photography

Heather Engbers, owner and photographer of HE & ME Photography, was the next business to set up shop in Maasdam’s building. Engbers previously worked from her home and on location providing newborn, children, family, senior, engagement, and wedding photography services but desired a spot to offer more extensive indoor photo shoots and expand her business. On Mar. 15, 2017, Engbers’ business dreams came true when she moved into the west side of the building.

“I love that I go to my studio, and I have the space I need for different set ups for my session and for my clients,” said Engbers. “It fits my natural, simple style, which is the look I strive for in my portraits. It's a great location and easy to find in Sully.”

Engbers’ new photography studio features a shiplap backdrop and plenty of space to capture precious memories from behind the camera lens. Studio hours vary for the photographer and are by appointment.

Kreykes Law Office

Kreykes Law Office, occupying the front west side of the building, was the final business to move into Maasdam’s building in mid-April. The Sully branch will be staffed by Fred Kreykes, Wes Chaplin, and Andrew Aeilts on a rotating basis. Together, the three businessmen offer over 60 years of combined legal service and will provide a full range of services, including but not limited to estate planning, family law, criminal defense, commercial litigation, debt collection, personal injury/wrongful death represen-tation, and other legal matters.

“We have a number of existing clients from the Sully and Lynnville area, and we felt this new office is an opportunity to provide a higher level of service and convenience to them,” said Chaplin. “In addition, we have long admired the commitment to excellence and good professional relationships shown by businesses and industry in Sully and wanted to expand our service area to assist these businesses and individuals. Sully is a growing community, and we want to be involved in that growth.”

Kreykes Law Office in Sully will be open on Monday and Tuesday, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and at other times by appointment.

Fast Trax Sports display area

The last open area of Maasdam’s new building is a space reserved for himself. A garage area in the southeast corner of the building currently serves as a display for snowmobiles and other equipment. Maasdam said the room is a big asset to his original business, Fast Trax Sports, as it allows vehicles and equipment to be stored, yet easily accessible for customers wanting to buy in the off-season.

The new building, located at 104 1st Street beside Fast Trax Sports, will be open to the public for an open house on Saturday, Apr. 22, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Maasdam invites everyone to attend to get a glimpse of the new space featuring design inspired by the early 1900s, enjoy Pella baked goods and drinks, as well as sign up to win a free 30-minute massage from Winegar or $50 off a HE & ME Photography session.
