Terpstra’s photo wins honorable mention in photo contest

Warren Terpstra of Sully recently won an honorable mention for his photo “Amish Country Road” in Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) 10th Annual Capture the Heart of America Photo Contest at the end of 2017. Terpstra won in the Life on the Iowan Farm category with his photo taken in Kalona on a rainy day after he and his wife exited a country store. The photo features a buggy driving down a country road. In 2016, Terpstra won a first place and an honorable mention for two photos entered in the same contest.

Voted on by a panel of judges, awards were given to the top photos in each of six categories: Life on the Iowan Farm, Iowan Farmscapes, American Agriculture, Celebrations of Iowa Agriculture, Modern Agriculture, and Silos & Smokestacks Partner Sites.

Photography is Terpstra’s retirement hobby. In 2017, Terpstra also received first and second places for two photos he entered in the 2017 photo contest by the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge.

SSNHA’s "Best of Show" was awarded to Justin Rogers of Ankeny for his photo, "Harvest Sunset" in the Life on the Iowan Farm category. The photo was chosen by the public in an online voting campaign Nov. 28- Dec. 1. The contest allows Silos & Smokestacks to share America's agricultural story across the entire United States. A complete list of winners and their photos can be viewed at www.silosandsmokestacks.org/photo-contest.

"It is amazing to see the variety of images taken each year and the unique story each one tells," said Cara Miller, SSNHA President.

Through a network of sites, programs, and events, Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area tells the story of farm life and agribusiness past and present. Silos & Smokestacks is an Affiliated Area of the National Park Service.
