Community events promise family-friendly weekend fun

Two community events in Lynnville and Sully on Saturday, Aug. 27, are sure to bring a lot of fun for people of all ages and all interests.

Smoke on the Water will be back at Old Settlers Park in Lynnville for the third consecutive year. The barbeque competition fundraiser will feature delicious food, a blue grass jam, a live performance by the band G24, and great camaraderie.

The fun starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27. A blue grass jam will take place from 1-6 p.m. as BBQ competitors prepare their specialties. At 5 p.m., attendees may pay $5 to sample the competition meats and side dishes from 17 central Iowa teams. The band G24 will perform at 6 p.m., and Zimm’s Kettlecorn will be available to purchase. Attendees are encouraged to take their lawn chairs but leave pets at home.

This year’s fundraiser will benefit Sophia Bell, daughter of David and Vicky (Collins) Bell of Sully. Sophia has Cystic Fibrosis, a rare, life-threatening genetic disease that affects the mucus of the lungs, sinuses, pancreas, and other organs. Sophia starts and ends her day with preventative treatment, takes up to 18 enzyme capsules daily, and has frequent follow-up visits with specialists to keep her healthy with preventative care, treatments, proper diet, and exercise.

Also on Saturday, Aug. 27, Sully Night Out organizers will be holding the Fourth Annual Cruizin’ the Square. The car show will be 4:30-7:30 p.m. this year around the Sully square. Pie and popcorn will be sold by the L-S Speech and Drama Club. Sully Lions Club will have a wide variety of food to purchase from 5:30-7 p.m. Sully Big Band will perform at 7 p.m. A horseshoe competition and coloring contest will also be held. Plan to take lawn chairs.
