An Arctic cold front ushered in 2018 with dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills up to 45 degrees below zero in Iowa. The new year broke records right away with the U.S. National Weather Service in Des Moines recording a temperature of -19, which was the lowest temperature recorded in Des Moines on Jan. 1 since 1887. Those broken records continued as temperatures plummeted and wind chills reached the -20 to -40 degree range for several days.

Students and staff members resuming school after winter break were able to ease into early morning routines slowly as Lynnville-Sully and Sully Christian School classes were delayed for two hours Wednesday-Friday, Jan. 3-5. Elementary school recesses were eliminated or cut short due to the weather. Several homeowners experienced frozen pipes as a result of the below-freezing temperatures that lingered for days.

Cold temperatures lingered into early Saturday but warmer air pushed into the area on Sunday, and the mercury rose to the upper 30s, a welcome relief for those tired of the dangerously cold conditions. The break from the cold was forecasted to last the first part of the work week, but would be followed with temperatures falling back into the normal range for mid-January.
